This is the climax of Exodus - the making of the covenant.
This covenant does have some conditions. God blessings is determined on our obedience.
We are not under this covenant. His blessings are determined based on Christ’s sacrifice.
Marriage ceremony???
Exodus 24:1-2 - Follow God’s Lead
Exodus 24:1-2 - Follow God’s Lead
haha dance story?????
1 Then he said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. 2 Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.”
Come up to the Lord -
You and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu - Aaron his brother and his sons.
Seventy elders - number significant?
Moses was the Representative - as a Representative of the law.
Exodus 24:3-4 - Start with God’s Word.
Exodus 24:3-4 - Start with God’s Word.
3 Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.”
Moses came and told
All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do - Good intentions. haha like starting a diet. I will never eat junk food again.
God standard is perfection. They had no idea.
4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.
Wrote down - everything that we studied this past moth, all the laws.
Rose early - probably could not sleep well.
built an altar - 12 pillars for the 12 tribes.
Exodus 24:5-8 - Go back to the blood.
Exodus 24:5-8 - Go back to the blood.
5 And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord.
How they would sacrifice the animal is they would first kill the animal and drain the blood.
6 And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar.
The blood on the alter was simbolically showing hte forgivess of sins.
7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”
Book of the coveant - all the laws that Moses just wrote down.
Read it for the people. - so they could hear. Most were illiterate. Moses had a good education though.
We will be obedient - once again they enter into this agreement - Marriage ceremony????
8 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
threw the blood - gross.
This was not normal later on. So why did he do that? It was starting the covenet. The animals dying was for the forgiveness of sins. The blood of them was to make them clean going forward??
You would remember that. Which was the point.
Exodus 24:9-14 - Commune with God.
Exodus 24:9-14 - Commune with God.
9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness.
All these men went up - having been cleansed by the blood.
They saw God - that is a problem because Jesus says no one has seen God. This was was a theophany. No one has seen God and in his unbridled form. But this is God purposefully restricting himself.
like the very heaven for clearness???
The only way they could see God is because of the blood covering them - same for us.
11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.
huh? food celebrated a new coventant.
12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.”
He invites Moses up even further to God.
tablets of stone.
I have written - God wrote ten commandments.
13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God.
Joshua went up - New Testament confuses Joshua and Jesus frequently. Any guesses why? They are the same name in Hebrew. Significant now that Moses, symbolically took Joshua (Jesus) up with him, symbolic of new covenant. Joshua was going to be the one to lead his people out of Israel.
haha Joel and Joel.
14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”
That’s not going to turn out well.
Exodus 24:15-18 - Wait on God.
Exodus 24:15-18 - Wait on God.
15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.
Moses spent 6 days in the presence of the Lord before hearing from God. We need to spend time in God’s glory first.
17 Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.
glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire - This is not a warm fuzzy (to warm haha)
18 Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
Moses then spends 40 days hearing from God.
mount of transfiguration???????
