We have to look at this word for substance, assurance, Certainty.
The word here has so many different uses in antiquity its difficult to pinpoint exact the usage, but we still get the point.
The word has to do with the undergirding reality of a thing.

Faith that Commends
It commends us before God.
All that means is that our faith is what puts us into right standing with God by which he approves us.
Even though our behaviour is not approved, our sin is not approved, our faith commends us.
So the Writer of Hebrews points us to the saints of old.
