Introduction:

To properly understand the text we should remember that in the East the roofs of the houses were usually flat. In fine weather, the inhabitants would resort to these flat roofs to breathe the fresh air, to enjoy a fine prospect, or to witness any event in the neighborhood.
These roofs were used as places for drying flax. Rahab took the spies to the roof of her house and hid them under the flax. In the evening, the roof was a place of resort. David was walking on the roof of his house when he fell into temptation that led to his great sin. Peter went upon the housetop to pray when he had that remarkable vision that led to the opening of the door of salvation to the Gentile world.
God ordered a battlement built around the roof to protect human life. Let us name the four walls which make the protection complete.
Erect the Battlement of Love to God.
A. Love to God is the first commandment - Matt. 22:37-38
Matthew 22:37–38 KJV 1900
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment.

1 John 2:15 KJV 1900
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Deuteronomy 10:12 KJV 1900
12 And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
2. Erect the Battlement of Love To Fellow Men.

Matthew 22:39 KJV 1900
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
3. Erect the Battlement of Reverence for the Bible.
A. This wall meant much to Hezekiah 2 Kings 18:5-7
2 Kings 18:5–7 KJV 1900
5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. 6 For he clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses. 7 And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
B. This wall meant much to Timothy 2 Timothy 3:15
2 Timothy 3:15 KJV 1900

4. Erect the Battlement of Prayer.
A. We should pray in the day of trouble Psalms 50:15
