Well, hello again.
I'm excited for us today to continue our study on marriage and family just to catch us all up from where we left off last week, we talked about three questions and we really want to answer those three questions.
However, we ran out of time, we only got to answer to, so the two that we looked at last week and we spent our time in Ephesians chapter 5 verses 22 through 33 to answer these two questions.
The first one was, what is God's design for marriage, right?
And the second one is why is it so important that we actually follow his design for marriage rather than trying to do this on her own?
Okay, and so, what is God's design for marriage?
Well, we realized that it is a reflection of Christ relationship with the church.
So Are we see a wife submitting to her husband as the church submits to Christ?
Because Christ is the head of the church, right?
And the husband is the head of her of her of his wife.
And then we see that there were rolls right within that and that the role of the husband was to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
And at that is a sacrificial and a selfless, kind of love that.
The husband is to look out for his wife's best interest, her highest good at all times.
And then we looked at this kind of selfless and sacrificial.
Love can only be done as the husband and wife continued to join God in his work in the work that he wants to do in them and through them, okay?
And like I said, we spent the majority of our time in Ephesians but then we turn to Colossians and we turn the clocks and chapter 3 and we looked verses 1 through 19 and we started answering that third question just a little bit of a two-part, question of the first one was.
Okay, what?
What does it look like to actually live this out?
Functionally day today for the husband for the wife?
All right.
So what does it look like for us to really be able to follow God's design for marriage?
And then what we want to do today, as we want to continue that unpacking that a little bit more as we work through Colossians because we ran out of time last week.
And so, we're going to answer that question some more today, but we're going to look at exactly what it looks like for the family to because we're going to add two more versus today that we're going to study.
We're going to add versus 20 and 21 OK abouts children obeying their parents and fathers, shepherding their children.
So that's where we're going today.
And I am really excited to do that, but before we get started, before we open up God's word, we really need to see Kim, right?
We need to each one of us.
He can that he would enter in and open our hearts and Minds to receive what he has for us today.
So, let's turn to him in prayer.
Father, we are weak and needy.
We are a people who are desperate left ourselves.
We do not love well.
answer right now asking today that you would take your word and you would really help us to meet with you in ways that are very real and personal.
Are we do?
We pray that we would make changes not?
Because we have the capacity to change our hearts and Minds with, but we would join you.
It would join you in the work that you want us to join you in and how that work completed, as you do it in us and through us.
So father please help us today, we ask all this in Jesus name.
If you have your Bibles, you can go ahead and turn to Colossians chapter 3.
And we're going to reread the passage, right?
That's the best thing to do so that we can get back in it.
And again, I'm going to add versus 20 and 21 today.
So I'll begin reading.
Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated, at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things above, not on Earthly things for you died, and your life, is now hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is your life appears that you also will appear with him in glory?
Put to death therefore whatever, belongs to your Earthly nature, sexual immorality and Purity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Because of these the wrath of God is coming, you used to walk in these ways in the life you once lived, but now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these anger or rage malice slander and filthy language from your lips do not lie to each other.
Since you've taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its creator.
Here there is no Gentile or Jew circumcised or uncircumcised Barbarian cynthian slave or free.
But Christ is all and is in all therefore as God's chosen people holy and dearly loved clothe yourselves with compassion kindness, humility, gentleness and patience bear with each other and forgive one.
Another, if any of you has a grievance against someone forgive as the Lord forgave you, and over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect Unity.
Let the Peace of Christ rule in your hearts sense, as members of one body, you were called to peace and be thankful.
But the message of Christ's well among you richly as you teach and admonish.
One another with all wisdom through songs hymns and songs from the spirit singing to God with gratitude in your hearts and whatever you do.
Whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord, Jesus giving, thanks to God the Father through him.
Wives submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands love your wives and do not be harsh with them children.
Obey your parents in everything.
For this pleases.
The Lord fathers do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.
Okay.
Now I'm back here in Colossians 3:1.
Paul tells us to set our hearts on things above, not on Earthly things.
In order to have a god-honoring marriage, both the husband and the wife must be living for God's kingdom purposes.
But unfortunately, some spouses end up living for their own little kingdom of Juan.
And that makes it impossible for Selfless Love.
And humble submission to be a part of their marriage.
and then in verse 35 were told to put to death therefore whatever belongs to your Earthly nature, sexual immorality and Purity, lust evil desires and greed, which is idolatry And then Paul said, to also rid yourselves of all such things as these anger, rage malice slander and filthy language from your lips.
Kirin verse 10.
We see this is in a present, perfect tense.
Okay, what that means is.
It's it.
Expresses a past action that has ongoing consequences So this phrase image of its creator or image of God you may have heard this in the Latin it's called and Mago de and it's a very important principle for us as Believers, right?
It's very, very important is foundational to our to our faith in.
And so let's learn about this, some more.
Sorry.
Then God said let us make Mankind in our image in our likeness so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground.
See mankind was made in God's image.
But because of the Fall, sin has marred that image.
And now God is at work in every believer's Life, free making us back into the fullness of the image of Christ.
And the author of Hebrews explains it this way, for by one sacrifice, he is made perfect forever.
Those who are being made?
Holy This is another present perfect.
Tense Christ.
Finished work on the cross.
Paid the penalty for our sins past action.
And the father now views us through.
Jesus is substitutionary atonement as holy and righteous those who are being made holy or those believers who are being made back into the image of Christ ongoing action.
this is important for wives and husbands to remember because each of them is a work-in-progress by God's grace We often become discouraged when our marriage doesn't seem to be growing and God honoring ways.
And it can be difficult to identify evidence of God's grace at times within this change process, especially in our own personal struggle with suffering and sin.
I've heard it said that change is best measured in decades as you look back over longer periods of time and you do identify particular ways that God has worked in your life.
Your marriage.
Or in your spouse.
And you're able to identify because you're not looking at it day-to-day.
You're looking at it while this is where God has brought me or brought us right in our marriage and it's much easier to identify what he's been doing in your in your marriage.
But when we are in doubt, we need to remember some things we need to remember, Paul's words the flippy ends.
Being confident of this that he who began a good work in, you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
and, The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
He will do it.
