Outline of Message: John the Apostle- The Word- John the Baptist- The Coming True Light- Jesus is made known
The Full picture: The Word made flesh
Understand the Significance of This passage - This is the beginning of Jesus earthly ministry.

The Apostle John and Background

John, Son of Zebedee who was formerly a fisherman in Galilee followed Jesus in faith with his brother James.
Location of John 1: Jordan River
John was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ
John was a fisherman in Galilee
John was one of Jesus best friends.

The Word

John 1:1–2 KJV 1900
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
It is no coincidence John writes this the same way Genesis was written.
John has a message through this Gospel just as every other one had a different one
John 20:31 KJV 1900
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Realize the message of John is that you might believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God
Paul is writing to unbelievers and Christians!
Unbelievers: Realize there is a way out of judgment in hell
Believers: Realize the power that you have in Jesus
John 1:3–4 KJV 1900
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
“In Him was life”
(Go to Paralel verse)
John 14:6 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus came to give new life
“And the life was the light of men”
(Paralel)
John 8:12 KJV 1900
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
What light are you looking for?
Is it: love, hope, happiness, friendship, family, peace
Every human being is searching for something.
When you go to the grocery store are you there to just walk around, or are you focused on your shopping list?
Shopping with my Aunt has always been an experience. She had that list and I felt like I signed up for a marathon. *Run*
Here’s a little bit what it looked like… grab this, “okay”- grab this, “okay”, grab this, “okay”
We are a consumer society. We think we need something the others have.
Grab the new iphone- okay
Grab the new computer- okay
Listen to this new song- okay
All of these people want our eyes and attention.
But Jesus said, I am the light of the world

John The Baptist

John 1:6 KJV 1900
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
John The Baptist enters our story
John 1:7–8 KJV 1900
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
John’s purpose in life was to bear witness to Jesus. He was taking part in the Great Commission.
Are you bearing witness to the Light?
Notice John the Baptist is not that light
Notice how the apostle John writes this...
He was not that light (Denial)
but (Contrast)
was sent
to bear witness of that light (Purpose)
Every Character in the Bible has one reason they are there- To Glorify God.
Why did the Apostle Paul use John the Baptist?
To bring back the glory to God.

The Coming True Light

John 1:9–13 KJV 1900
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
The Light came to give light to everyone
Isaiah 49:6 KJV 1900
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, That thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
The light is for everyone.
The world doesn’t know the light.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not
Undercover boss- https://youtu.be/bPF1vRFwlD0?t=100
The light doesn’t hide itself it reveals. (True Light)
The light gives power to be a son or daughter of God. (Sons of God)
The light has a name. (believe on His name)
John is building up this suspense of Old Testament references and truth’s about this light. Never forget that the background of the whole church right now is division between Jews and Gentiles. Without even saying Jesus name John is accounting for hundreds of years of prophecy that was being fulfilled here at the Jordan River.
John would have written this book towards the end of the first century leaving some years in between this story that he had witness that Jesus is God.
John saw a many things after John the Baptist and it was more than a story- it was a life pointing to Jesus.
Jesus Is Made Known
John 1:14–17 KJV 1900
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Notice the recurrence of the Word. Theres something special about the Word.
The Apostle John is re-telling what he’s written already.

Dwelt Among Us
New Word: Glory
John: Verse by Verse The Incarnation of the Word (1:14)

If “we have seen his glory,” no wonder there was no longer a need for the temple. All that the temple meant was wrapped up in Jesus. The glory of God, once sealed in the temple on penalty of death, was now opened up to all in Jesus. This glory is further defined as “the glory of the one and only Son.” In the KJV this was translated “the only begotten,” for the Greek term is monogenēs. This can be used of an only child (Judg 11:34 LXX; Luke 7:12; Heb 11:17), but that is not the force here. The components of the word are monos and ginomai, and here they mean “the only one of a kind,” stressing the uniqueness of “the one and only Son,” the God-man who alone shared the divine glory.

“Charles Spurgeon”
Jesus is one of a kind.
Full of Grace and Truth
The word grace is found 155 times in the New Testament
The word truth is found 110 times in the New Testament
Two things about God
He is gracious
He is Truth
He was before me
back to Genesis 1
John 1:18 KJV 1900
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
No one has seen the full glory of God.
Think of all the glory of God we see just in Creation- which still doesn’t compare to his glory.
In the Bosom means in close relationship with the Father.
Jesus is God
Outline:
The Word that spoke Creation into existence was with and was God.
In the Word is light and life
The Word was made flesh
The Word is Jesus Christ
