New Word: Glory
If “we have seen his glory,” no wonder there was no longer a need for the temple.
All that the temple meant was wrapped up in Jesus.
The glory of God, once sealed in the temple on penalty of death, was now opened up to all in Jesus.
This glory is further defined as “the glory of the one and only Son.”
In the KJV this was translated “the only begotten,” for the Greek term is monogenēs.
This can be used of an only child (Judg 11:34 LXX; Luke 7:12; Heb 11:17), but that is not the force here.
The components of the word are monos and ginomai, and here they mean “the only one of a kind,” stressing the uniqueness of “the one and only Son,” the God-man who alone shared the divine glory.
