Background
Paul writing to the church at Colossae (Colossians is a letter)
Paul had never been to the church and so he relys on the appointed leaders (Epaphras) to share how things are going
Epaphras shares of the faith, endurance and struggles of the church
Colossae is struggling with false teachings (specifically about spiritual forces)
Resurrection of Christ isnt enough
Captive to their cultural customs
Influenced by Original teachings that you live how you want then you make a sacrifice
Paul opens with encouragement of thankfulness, prayer, and wisdom
Paul then transitions to Jesus and who he is
Jesus is the image of the invisible God, Creator, Sustainer, Beginning and End, Jesus is the head of the church,
Through Jesus Gods plan of redemption was carried out, and because of Christs death we are able to be redeemed
Jesus calls us to endure
Paul explains that with Christ he is able to endure in the sufferings for the ministry of the church
God revealed himself to Paul and has been tasked with helping to lead the church of Christ
With God, through Jesus, and empowered by the Holy Spirit Paul continues to teach, preach, and shepherd the church
Paul is relating to the church that although they have never seen him, Paul has struggles but that the faith in Christ is what enables him to push on in his minisry
Likewise, in our own walk we should be on guard against false teachings and make sure that our belif is found in Jesus who makes us alive
And because it is Jesus who justifies us we are not subject to human disqualification
Even though we cant be disqualified by humans, we are to live in such a way that shows that there has been a change within us
We are to put to death the old self and out on the new self
We are to put on Jesus and love one another

Col 3:15–17 - 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.
And be thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
To which indeed you were called in one body - The church of Colossae is called together
Individually believers put off the old self and put on the new self and together they are to have the word of God dwell in them richly, they are to teach and admonish one another in wisdom, they are to worship with one another, and do everything through Jesus Christ and giving thanks to God.
As a church we are to do the same - As believers sometimes differing types of relationships occur
Template - of someone you should be seeking
I know many of you met your spouse in the church and specifically in this church
Thats also not the story for many of you and thats what I love about the sovereignty and providence of God, that no matter how you came to Christ, or how you got together, you are given a template of what to look for or what you should do.
There is a blessing that comes about when two believers come together
Paul talks about some of these relationships next
Pull out your phone and find a family photo
Maybe you can visually see ine in your head
I want you think about your family functions
What are some things you are responsible for, your husbnd/wife, your children
How do yall interact with one another
If your mad at your spouce right now I’m pretty sure you arent thinking about happy thoughts
Do you have happy thoughts?
What are some things within the family that need to be changed?
Think about yourself, what do you need to do to be better within your family?
Colossians 3:18-4:1 “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.
You are serving the Lord Christ.
For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.
Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.”
Marriage
I am fully aware that some of you have been married longer than I’ve been alive
I could come to any of you and learn about marriage and family and I am sure I can learn a lot from you
But if I didnt have anyone, If I had nothing but the Bible to show me what it means to have a Christian marriage and Christian house hold - That is all that I need
So today, my goal is to teach and to preach God’s biblical intent and design for marriage
This is going to be a high level overview of our role and not going to discuss detailed things like finances (ex.
who does the checkbook,
If just looking at 1 passage I may not get all the information I need but looking at scripture as a whole, it will be clear (Ephesians 5.)
The goal for you today church is to have one of three things happen
1. Be freed from earthly captive thoughts about God’s design and intent for marriage
We talked about being held captive to worldy ideologies and traditions, has any crept into your marriage?
2. To serve as a reminder of what God intends for believers in marriage and family
3.
To encourage you that no matter how inexperienced or experienced in marriage and family you are, you can still grow in it.
As we talk through this I want to reiterate that this section is for believers and so there are foundations that we need to ensure that we are on the same page about.
This assumes that we believe and acknowledge the trinitarian view of God.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Each have distinctive roles but all are part of the triune God.
This assumes that God is the head and that we are under Him.
This also assumes that God’s intent, design, and commands for living is the only way to do so.
So lets start with every ladies favorite Bible Verse.
“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands if you have nuged or made eye contact with your wife, your in trouble
Your in trouble because of this word “submit” and it seems like now a days its viewed as a bad word
The world today in an attempt to discredit Christianity takes the word “submit” and makes it seem as though Christianity makes the women less than men.
That men and women are not equal and because they arent equal, the women have to do what men say.
Some men within the Christian faith take the word submit and twist it to mean that the woman has to do what he says and tries to use as a means of authority.
While there is an aspect of the husband being the head of the house, it is willing authority that shouldnt be abused.
Submit doesnt mean to be less than or to obey
Submit means to be under
In the text “submitting” is something the woman has to willingly do
She has to willingly do this because women are created equal to men
So this text would have been groundbreaking for the church of Colossae
Culturally speaking women were viewed as less than men
So while today people are trying to attack Christianity on the basis of equality, Paul in this text was using it to teach equality
Paul is teaching that their cultural beliefs and background about the equality of men and women is wrong and that God intends on man and woman being equal.
Lets go to the very beginning
Genesis 1:27-31 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
And God blessed them.
And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit.
You shall have them for food.
And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
And it was so.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”
Both male and female are made in the image of God
Both male and female have dominion
Both male and female are given the earth
