I. Paul

A. Paul’s Calling

1. Called for Christ.

1 tim 1 1 “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,”
Born Saul:
Philippians 3:5–6 NASB95
5 circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.
Apostle of Jesus Christ
Acts 1:22 NASB95
22 beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
Saved and Called by God on the Road to Damascus in Acts 9.
1 Corinthians 9:1 NASB95
1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?
Called Paul after his calling. Paul=small, because of physical appearance?
Paul states his apostleship not for Timothy but for the churches that Timothy was ministering.

2. Called by Christ’s Command

1 Timothy 1 1 “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,”
commandment is a royal decree
Galatians 1:1 NASB95
1 Paul, an apostle (not sent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),
Galatians 1:15 NASB95
15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased
Acts 26:15–18 NASB95
15 “And I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 ‘But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; 17 rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’

B. Paul’s Motive

1. God’s Salvation

1 Timothy 1:1 “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,”
Psalm 25:5 NASB95
5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day.
Habakkuk 3:18 NASB95
18 Yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
God is a God who saves, who wants to save, and goes to extreme measures to bring salvation. Paul is motivate by this God who saves. He is not motivated by fear or religious merit.

2. Hope of Jesus

1 Timothy 1:1 “1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,”
Jesus is our hope, Not...science, religion, worldly philosophy, riches, politics, etc.

II. Timothy

A. Timothy’s Value

1. Value of a Man

1 Timothy 1:2 “2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
a. Saved on Paul’s 1st missionary jouney in 47AD.
b. First mentioned in Acts 16 on Paul’s 2nd missionary journey in 49AD.
Acts 16:1–3 NASB95
1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, 2 and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium. 3 Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

2. Value of Relationship

1 Timothy1:2 “2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Marks of a true disciple: (John MacArthur)

1. They are True Believers (Salvation)

1 Timothy 6:12 NASB95
12 Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

2. They Obey Christ

John 14:15 NASB95
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 14:21 NASB95
21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
1 Timothy 4:6 NASB95
6 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.

3. They Serve Humbly

Romans 16:21 NASB95
21 Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.
some in the church were proud and serving themselves.
1 Timothy 3:6 NASB95
6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.

4. They Hold to Sound Doctrine

1 Timothy 4:6 NASB95
6 In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.
Timothy had to fight against false doctrine in Ephesus.
1 Timothy 6:3 NASB95
3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness,

5. They Have Courageous Conviction.

1 Timothy 4:13–16 NASB95
13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. 15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. 16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
Tradition says, Timothy was killed in Ephesus in AD 97 apposing the cult Diana.
Philippians 2:20 NASB95
20 For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.
Not like Demas who left the faith.
This is desire of every one who disciples another. Timothy is the full

B. Timothy’s Need

1. Grace

Charis. This is the unmerited favor of God. It is by God’s grace that we are saved and it is by God’s grace that we stand and have standing in the presence of God. Grace takes away our sin and gives us righteousness in its place.

2. Mercy

Describes compassion for people who are in difficult circumstances with a desire to help them out of the difficulty they are in.
If grace takes away sin, Mercy takes away the misery that sin has created in our lives.
Paul’s usual greeting was Grace and Peace, but mercy is added probably because Timothy was having trouble with false teachers and all kinds of heresies in present church assignment.

3. Peace

Freedom from conflict with God, with other people and within our own heart. Peace brings tranquility.

C. Timothy’s Source

1. Father

1 Timothy 1:2 “2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God the Father is the source of grace, mercy, and peace in the believer’s life. Like an earthly father who wants the best for his children and to give them every advantage in life, so is our Heavenly Father. He continually pours out His grace. He continually pours out His mercy, and He continually pours out his peace.

2. Lord

1 Timothy 1:2 “2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
