More than. . .

How often do you get more than you ask for or expect? Or get something you did not ask for or expect?
(Truly ask the questions and wait for any possible answers)
Man came with questions and left with more questions about eternal life.
Woman expected water but got Living water
Man expected Jesus to come; but Jesus healed from a distance
Man looked at water for healing, and the healer of the world healed him.
The apostles looked for money to buy food; Jesus provided food for the masses
Jews looked to accuse and discredit; Jesus offered up credible witnesses
Apostles caught in a storm and were afraid; Jesus calms the storm and delivered them.
In our passage tonight and the next couple of weeks we are going to get into the words of Jesus and His words are more than what the people expected or even wanted. Tonight we look at the words of Jesus to the people.

Words to learn from

May we take the time to read our passage and glean from it, then look at what we can learn, take away from it.
John 6:26–27 NASB95
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 “Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”
John 6:28–29 NASB95
28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
John 6:30–31 NASB95
30 So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform? 31 “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’ ”
Let’s pause there for a moment and see what we see from there then go on.
What observations did you make (vv.26-31)?
Why did Jesus say they were seeking Him (v.26)?
What does Jesus tell them to work for, and who will provide it (v.27)?
What is the work of God (v.29)?
What did the people want from Jesus, and why (v.30)?
Let’s press on gleaning
John 6:32–33 NASB95
32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”
John 6:34–35 NASB95
34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
John 6:36–38 NASB95
36 “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. 37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
John 6:39–40 NASB95
39 “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
What general observations do you make of (vv.32-40)?
Who is the giver mentioned in (v.32)?
What is the bread of God (v.33)?
Who does Jesus say He is, and what does He offer (v.35)?
Where did Jesus come from and why (v.38)?
What is the will of the Father (v.39-40)?
So, now may we focus on a few things in our time together this evening
Right food (6:25-30)
Right bread (6:31-38)
Right Will (6:39-40)

Right Food

Everyone needs food right? Food, air, water are the things that sustain us in this life, right? But the right food is good for you. Jesus uses the common to teach the spiritual in our passage.
Jesus had done several miracles by this time, this last one (Jn6:1-13) was feeding (physical) the 5000 and it drew quiet a stir.
The people wanted to make, force Jesus to be their king and set them free from the oppression of Rome (Jn6:14-15)
John 6:14–15 NASB95
14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
People sought to follow Him (Jn6:22, 24-25)
John 6:24–25 NASB95
24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
The people ask a question, when did You get here, when in reality they wanted to know how did you get here. You did not come in the boat with the disciples, we did not see You.
Jesus answers the question not with the truth, “well I walked on the water across the sea, stopped to help the disciples, got in the boat, calmed the storm and transported them instantly to the other side. He answer with the real reason they sought him.
John 6:26 GNB
26 Jesus answered, “I am telling you the truth: you are looking for me because you ate the bread and had all you wanted, not because you understood my miracles.
They did not understand the miracles, the purpose of the miracles. Can you remember why the miracles, the signs, the wonders were done and where you find the answer?
John 20:30–31 NASB95
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
(Transition) Jesus is speaking of two kinds of food, one that perishes, one that endures to everlasting life (v.27). Let’s take a few minutes and look at this.

Food

Jesus knows the hearts of man (Jn2:25) and knows the motives. Jesus uses that to teach both on the physical and the eternal. He gives an admonition that we can learn from.
The food that perishes (Jn6:26-27; Jn4:13; Ecc1:17, 2:1-11)
We all need food in our physical body, Jesus is not denying that, but he is saying don’t labor for it, don’t make it your mission for that.
John 6:26–27 The Message
26 Jesus answered, “You’ve come looking for me not because you saw God in my actions but because I fed you, filled your stomachs—and for free. 27 Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.”
Physical food is perishable, even with all the preservatives, well maybe except for Velvetta Cheese, or Government cheese from yesteryear (LOL)
Physical food satisfies for a time, but you find yourself hungry again soon and thirsty again soon too. Biblical example
John 4:13 NASB95
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
(Transition) that is literal food, but there is figurative food too.
Figurative food that perishes
Human wisdom
Human folly
Mirth and pleasure
Wealth and industries labor (Ecc1:17, 2:1-2, 3-11)
(Transition) Jesus tells them who are looking to get fed again, to need labor for such food. Now, please don’t get this that we are not to do anything and stand there with our hand out for free food
Don’t labor for the temporal food
Though a Christian is to provide for family (1Tim5:8)
1 Timothy 5:8 NASB95
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
One is not work or not eat (2The3:10-12)
2 Thessalonians 3:10–12 NASB95
10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.
It should not be a priority in life though (Mt6:31-33)
Matthew 6:31–33 NASB95
31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Why does Jesus tell the people not to worry about food or drink (Mt6:31-32)?
(Transition) Jesus wants our focus, our energy our efforts on food that endures for eternity.
Food that endure for eternity
The word of God (Mt4:4; Job23:12; Ps119:72; Jer15:16: and 1Pt1:22-25)
Matthew 4:4 NASB95
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
Job said Job23:12 “12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.”
Or Jeremiah said Jer15:16 “16 Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.”
Or here, look with me at Peter’s words
1 Peter 1:22–23 NASB95
22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, 23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.
1 Peter 1:24–25 NASB95
24 For, All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off, 25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you.
What does Peter say about the word (1Pt1:23, 25)?
It is Jesus who is the Word (Jn1:1, 14, 17-18, 6:31-35, 47-51)
We should be familiar with what John says, we have studied, referred to many times, but in case you are not, or have forgotten lets look at some important things we have looked at before, and that we will be looking at in the near future.
John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The word was in the beginning, and the Word was God
John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Word became flesh, and saw the glory of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth
John 1:17–18 NASB95
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Jesus is the true bread of life that came from the Father (Jn6:31-35) we read earlier and will get more into that next week.
Jesus is the bread that offers eternal life (Jn6:47-51) I will read that, but will get into it more in near future.
John 6:47–50 NASB95
47 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. 48 “I am the bread of life. 49 “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 “This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
John 6:51 NASB95
51 “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
Whew, that is a lot, I have no idea what I was thinking when I thought we would get to (v.40) tonight, not a chance, we still need to talk about laboring for the food that is eternal then will close out.
Labor for food that is eternal
Believe and have everlasting life (Jn6:28-29, 40)
We have read (vv.28-29) a couple times already and will get to (v.40) again next week, so I will pass by these for now.
Follow Him for He has words of eternal life (Jn6:66-69)
Listen to these words
John 6:66–68 NASB95
66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
What did Simon Peter say Jesus had (v.68)?
John 6:69 NASB95
69 “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
What were the results, what did they believe (v.69)?
Know Him for He is eternal life (Jn17:1-3)
Jesus in His prayer to the Father, check these verses out
John 17:1–2 NASB95
1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
John 17:3 NASB95
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
What is eternal life according to (v.3)?
Obey Him for He is the author of eternal life (Heb5:9-10)
Hebrews 5:9–10 NASB95
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Some food for thought as we close out, you can look these up on your own.
Let Paul’s attitude be ours (Php3:7-15)
Seeking to know the Lord more
Always pressing forward to know more, learn more.
Let Peter’s exhortation set the standard (2Pt1:5-8, 3:18)
Seeking to become more like the Lord through application, adding God’s graces to our walk
Always abounding more and growing more in grace and knowledge.
