I. Introduction

As we continue our mini series dubbed “Prep for Action” we need to be reminded about how the Lord wants us to carry out the Great Commission.

Jesus did not leave us as orphans, but sent the promise of His Father upon the original disciples and still does so for all current disciples of Christ.

In sharing our faith, preaching the gospel to the nations, we have been divinely empowered to join Christ’s mission. Lets see how in Acts 1:1-9.

II. Jesus prepares His disciples for His ascension (Acts 1:1-5)

A. Jesus gave the apostles commands through the Holy Spirit.

B. Jesus presented Himself alive to them after his passion.

1. many proofs
2. during 40 days
3. spoke about the kingdom of God

C. Jesus ordered the apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father which He had told them of.

John 14:16–17 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 15:26–27 ESV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
John 16:7 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

D. Jesus announces the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:11 ESV
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Acts 2:33 ESV
33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.

III. The disciples ask Jesus about the kingdom (Acts 1:6-7)

Acts 1:6–7 ESV
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.

IV. Jesus announces a new ministry of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:8)

Acts 1:8 ESV
