1 내가 다시 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 학대를 살펴 보았도다 보라 학대 받는 자들의 눈물이로다 그들에게 위로자가 없도다 그들을 학대하는 자들의 손에는 권세가 있으나 그들에게는 위로자가 없도다
2 그러므로 나는 아직 살아 있는 산 자들보다 죽은 지 오랜 죽은 자들을 더 복되다 하였으며
3 이 둘보다도 아직 출생하지 아니하여 해 아래에서 행하는 악한 일을 보지 못한 자가 더 복되다 하였노라
4 내가 또 본즉 사람이 모든 수고와 모든 재주로 말미암아 이웃에게 시기를 받으니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다
5 우매자는 팔짱을 끼고 있으면서 자기의 몸만 축내는도다
6 두 손에 가득하고 수고하며 바람을 잡는 것보다 한 손에만 가득하고 평온함이 더 나으니라
1 Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless. 2 So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living. 3 But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.
4 Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
5 “Fools fold their idle hands,
leading them to ruin.”
6 And yet,
“Better to have one handful with quietness
than two handfuls with hard work
and chasing the wind.”

11 “Why didn’t I die at birth,
my first breath out of the womb my last?
15 우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라
16 그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라
15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
4 그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아 하나님께 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라
5 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다
6 우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
5 But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
the sins of us all.
