Authority

Authority does not dictate worth, but it does play a crucial role in achieving a defined purpose.

Authority by nature implies or requires submission/obedience

God is the highest/ultimate authority!

Romans 13:1-2; Exodus 20:2-3.

The chain of command (authority) in the Trinity.

  • 1) The Father presides over the Son:
    • 1 Corinthians 15:23-28; 1 Corinthians 11:3
      • A father never gives responsibility without authority.
        • Jesus says, "All authority has been given to Me", and in John 3:35 we read "The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand."
      • Jesus submitted to achieve the Father's purpose.
        • Philippians 2:5-11; John 17:4; Hebrews 10:5-7
  • 2) The Holy Spirit obeys the Son:
    • Matthew 12:28; John 16:13-14.

Obedience comes from love

    • Jesus obeyed the Father because he (Jesus) loved Him.
    • Our obedience reflects our love
      • John 14:15; John 15:9-10; Mark 12:29-31

We love and submit to God by also submitting to one another.

    • Ephesians 5:21; Heb 10:24-25
