Introduction

Leaving the Temple - disciple mentions the temple and other wonderful buildings
Jesus tells them “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.
That would be confusing- so the disciples asked Jesus when they reached the mount of Olives across from temple. “Tell us when will these things be and what will the sign be when all of these things are about to be accomplish.
He warns them to be aware and see to it that no one leads them astray. Fails prophets will come and many will be lead astray , wars and rumors of wars, kingdom against kingdom. Jesus tells his followers to not be alarmed or anxious. All of this must take place. There will be earthquakes in various places and there will be famines.
This is all the beginnings of birth pains

The coming Persecution

these verses are on display for us in the Book of Acts. You can see these very words begin to be unfolded
Verse 9- 10
Jesus warns them to be on guard- (be carful , watch carefully) remember the disciples ask Jesus for sign. Jesus tells them this will happen. For they will deliver you over to councils and you will beaten in the Synagogues - persecution will first come from fellow Jews. Each synagogue had a council, “local councils” they will stand before governors and kings.
Persecution from Jews and Gentiles — Jesus gives them the reason here,” for my name sake” he says. To bear witness before them.
Verse 10 says and the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. This verse must be matched with the question- signs for all things to be accomplished.
The prophet Isaiah chapter 42:6 There would be a light for the nations, and in Chapter 49:6 God says “my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
Jesus said in Acts that the disciples would be his witness in Jerusalem, samaria, Judea and the end of the earth. The Gospel has always been foreordained to reach all peoples.
Persecution has always caused for the church to grow and strengthened. Comfort in the church has caused laziness and complacency.
gives instruction for flogging guilty persons found by the local jewish counsels. They would give 39 because they feared miss counting and violating the word of God. Paul indicated he received this punishment 5 times, a man who once was part of the persecution of believers now the persecuted. WHAT CHANGED THIS MAN ?
, and we see disciples of Christ being brought before the counsels, gov and rulers. They will hear the Gospel. The most powerful people of the age will hear about The Crucified and risen Lord.
Verse 11
Jesus tells the hearers to not be anxious beforehand in regards to what to say. --- PEOPLE TAKE THIS OUT OF CONTEXT
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Colossians 4:5–6 ESV
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
Colossians 4:5-6
Romans 10:14–15 ESV
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
This verse is specific for the immediate context and what will soon take place. This verse should not be used for evangelism.
Verse 12-13
Jesus gives another sign here, persecution will not only come from rulers and authorities. It will also come from within their own household.
The Prophet Micah in Chapter 7:6 mentions this in regards to families betraying one another
Siblings will turn against each other, parents against children, children against parents. In the Jewish household it was more than the individual that determined the identity and bore witness to God.
Joshua 24:15 ESV
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Jesus mentioned this in
Luke 12:49–53 ESV
“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
luke 12:49
Families being torn apart then and still now
verse 13 — and you will be hated by all for my names sake
Nero 64 AD
Todays Christians
But the one who endures to the end

Conclusion

Todays teaching is a reminder that the life as a christian isn’t one of comfort and lack of affliction. Despite what some teachers today are saying we aren’t to receive our best life now. I’m not saying we cant enjoy life and be blessed on earth. We here in America have been blessed beyond measure and we have protections for worship but we should never forget Jesus’s call to discipleship
Mark 8:34 ESV
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
2 Timothy 3:12 ESV
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
Remember what Jesus has told us about being persecution
Luke 6:22–23 ESV
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
We are to live out our life here weather in comfort of in affliction with Joy and thanks giving
2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV
I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.
Rom 5:
Romans 5:3–4 ESV
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
endures to the end
