We continue our series in the book of James today we will be looking at Chapter 5:13-15
We are almost at the end of this epistle our topic for today is Prayer-Centered Life / Vida centrada en la oración
James 5:13–15 “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”
Oremos
We are dividing this sermon into 2 main ideas
A. Prayer Appropriate to Any Situation (5:13)
B. Prayer for the Sick (5:14–15)
If you ask anyone how is your prayer life? you wont be surprise by their answer
It could be better
I’m not being intentional when i pray
My mind goes everywhere when i pray
Ive been so busy
and many more
A perfect way to bring awareness and humbleness to a believers heart
A classic definition of Christian prayer is “an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgement of his mercies”
Estimated Totals
Direct Prayers: Approximately 650 prayers.
Prayer is a very essential part of the Christian life
Prayer is, at its core, a humble recognition that God is all-sufficient and that we completely depend on Him.
It’s striking that the apostles asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.
They had witnessed Jesus perform miracles, teach profound truths, and display divine wisdom, yet when it came to prayer, they recognized something unique in how He approached God.
The apostles could have asked Jesus anything—about the kingdom of God, about how to perform miracles, or even about the nature of His divine authority—but what they wanted to understand was His relationship with God the Father.
I believe this is where James is taking us today
A proper relationship between all of life what we go through and a dependency upon the one who is able to respond to our needs

A. Prayer Appropriate to Any Situation (5:13)

James introduces this part about prayer with a few short questions and commands.
He asks, “Is anyone among you suffering?” and answers, “Let him pray.”
El pregunta - ¿Sufre alguno entre vosotros? Que haga oración.
The word for “suffering” (kakopatheō) refers to any kind of trouble, whether it’s external or internal.
Instead of responding to hardships with complaining, anger, or discouragement, James reminds believers of the right way to respond: through prayer.
This is important because there is an emotional element about suffering that gives rise to inner distress that can be display in— many different ways for example —
Feeling a sense of Injustice this is what the psalmist experienced in —
Psalm 119:53 “Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake your law.”
In the same way suffering can bring frustration — Job the perfect example of Suffering
Job 23:8–9 ““Behold, I go forward, but he is not there, and backward, but I do not perceive him; on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him; he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him.”
Job is expressing his frustration and confusion because he can't find God or understand why he's suffering.
He feels like God is hidden from him, and he’s searching for answers, but no matter where he looks, he can’t find God’s presence.
Just like us / Job’s struggled — his desire to know why he's going through such hardship.
I pretty sure that you have asked this your self in the midst of suffering
If you are facing a serious illness, you might wonder, "Why is this happening to me? Where is God in all of this?"
After losing a loved one, you may cry out, "God, why did You let this happen? I can't feel You near me."
During financial or personal struggles, you might think, "I’ve prayed and sought God, but it feels like He’s silent."
If our hearts have this posture— The Lord calls us to have the proper posture and proper attitude towards God in the midst of suffering
And what in the proper attitude towards God in the midst of suffering?
Instead of doubting in the midst of suffering —trust
Proverbs 3:5–6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Instead of feeling Ingratitude and Discontentment — thats the inclination of the heart — God calls us to be thankful — Paul Exhoting the church
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
In the same way he exhorted the church in Ephesus
Ephesians 5:20 “giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
Efesios 5:20 dando siempre gracias por todo, en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, a Dios, el Padre;
Why pray why in the midst of suffering?
Its a command
1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray without ceasing,”
1 Tesalonicenses 5:17 orad sin cesar
Prayer connects us to God's strength when ours fails.
Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”
It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles.
Isaiah 41:10 “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Through prayer, The Lord aligns our hearts with His purposes.
Matthew 6:10Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Mateo 6:10 Venga tu reino.
When was the last time you remember saying your will be one now Lord here
Prayer brings peace that surpasses understanding.
Philippians 4:6–7“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
It expresses our dependence on God for help.
Psalm 121:2My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Prayer leads us to God’s comfort. (Consuelo)
2 Corinthians 1:3–4“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
We should pray, asking God for the wisdom we need to understand the situation–
James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Prayer shifts our focus from problems to trust God's power.
Isaiah 26:3–4 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”
It cultivates hope in God’s promises.
Romans 12:12 “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Through prayer, we find rest for our souls.
Matthew 11:28–30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
What is so amazing thing about prayer is that even if we don’t know how to pray scripture gives us a promise that the spirit helps us
Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
Asthenia- sickness, weakness. Refers to a weakness or disability, often due to natural limitations or illness.
Romanos 8:26 Y de la misma manera, también el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad; porque no sabemos orar como debiéramos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles;
Astenia- enfermedad, debilidad.
So therefore
In suffering, we pray because God is our refuge and strength, giving comfort in trials.
We pray because He hears our cries and stays close to the brokenhearted.
Prayer connects us to His peace that surpasses all understanding.
In prayer, we find strength to endure and persevere through hardships.
We pray, trusting He works all things for good, even in our pain.
He understands our suffering, having endured it Himself, making prayer a place of connection.
Prayer aligns us with His sovereign plans, which are always perfect.
He invites us to cast every burden on Him through prayer.
Prayer reminds us of His promise never to leave or forsake us.
Through prayer, He transforms our suffering into spiritual growth and deeper reliance on Him.
Life brings a mix of experiences. in the same verse James asks,
“Is anyone cheerful?”Let him sing praise.
This means feeling joyful and uplifted, not necessarily free from trouble but having a positive spirit despite circumstances.
In just a few words, James captures the ups and downs of life.
Hard times can lead to anger toward God and neglect of prayer and faith. Similarly, easy times can make us lazy, complacent, and forgetful of our need for God.
Whether in suffering or ease, our response as Christians should always be prayer and praise.
Calvin puts it well when he comments that James ‘means that there is no time in which God does not invite us to himself’
The bible contains over 300 Verses about praising God — and Singing praises was a regular part of the life of Israel and of the early church
We see the attitude of worship— This attitude of (singing praises) is all over the book of Psalms
(Cantar alabanzas)
Psalm 98:1 “Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.”
Psalm 149:1 “Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!”
Salmos 149:1 ¡Aleluya!
Psalm 95:1 “Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!”
In the same way, major events in the Old Testament were accompanied by praises and singing to God.
I'll provide the references from the Bible, but I won't go into them for the sake of time.
1 Chronicles 15 describes the preparations and successful transport of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem.
The Ark is successfully carried to Jerusalem with great joy, music, and sacrifices. The entire nation celebrates the presence of God coming to the city.
2 Chronicles 5:12-13 During the dedication of Solomon's Temple, the Levites, musicians, and priests united in joyful worship, declaring God's goodness and enduring love, as His glory filled the temple in a cloud.
In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat leads Judah in seeking God through prayer and worship when facing a vast enemy army, and God delivers a miraculous victory as the people praise Him.
Equally important in the New Testament praises and singing, are central to worship and the expression of faith among believers.
For instance when Paul and Silas where in prison—
Acts 16:25 “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,”
In addition In Matthew 26:30 after Jesus and His disciples share the Last Supper,
Matthew 26:30 “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
“Let him sing praise.” Rather than asking something like, “Are things going well?” which would focus on external circumstances, James uses a word that emphasizes an internal attitude of cheerfulness or joyfulness.
Is your joy dependent on external circumstances, or does it flow from an unwavering trust in God?
Do you recognize those moments of inner cheerfulness as opportunities to lift your voice in praise to the Lord?
When you feel a sense of cheer or gladness, do you intentionally turn your heart and thoughts toward God in worship?
How often do you connect your inner joy with the presence and provision of God in your life?
Does your inner attitude of cheerfulness lead you to outward expressions of worship and thanksgiving?
James leaves out the phrase "among you" in the second part of verse 13, connecting it more closely to the first part.
This shows a contrast in how we respond to different situations. He seems to suggest that life includes both suffering and joy, and we should expect to experience both.
At the same time, some people in the church may be facing hard times, while others are enjoying seasons of cheerfulness.
One member may be celebrating recovery from an illness, while another is enduring a difficult diagnosis or chronic pain.
Some may rejoice in a job promotion or financial blessing, while others are stressed about job loss or mounting bills.
One family might be welcoming a new baby, while another is mourning the loss of a loved one.
Someone might feel close to God and thriving in their faith, while another struggles with doubt or spiritual dryness.
Some may be enjoying peaceful relationships with loved ones, while others are dealing with tension or broken relationships.
Certainly There is a beauty in all of this — you might think where is the beauty?
2 things and i close
remember the mission of our church?the very last paragraph — To this end, we meet every Lord’s Day to worship God and to commune according to the relational commands in Scripture - the "one anothers."
So our mission comes from the scripture so let me remind the words of Paul to the church in Ephesus
Ephesians 5:19–20 “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
Efesios 5:19-20 hablando entre vosotros con salmos, himnos y cantos espirituales, cantando y alabando con vuestro corazón al Señor; dando siempre gracias por todo, en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, a Dios, el Padre;
Likewise in
Colossians 3:16“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
We can’t neglect by no means the gathering and life surrounded by the church
The Church is providing the means— the question is are we being faithful to what is provided

And second in the midst of suffering and in the midst of Joys there is a beauty in Christ
The greatest Suffering that Christ bore brought about the greatest Joy we can experience El mayor sufrimiento que soportó Cristo trajo consigo la mayor alegría que podemos experimentar.
Because of our Justifier / Por causa de nuestro Justificador
Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Jesus is the perfect example of how suffering can lead to the greatest joy.
He endured immense pain and hardship during His life, culminating in His crucifixion, yet His suffering brought about the greatest victory and joy for humanity through His resurrection.
When it comes to Suffering with Purpose—Jesus experienced rejection, pain, and sorrow, but His suffering had a divine purpose: to bear the sins of his elect, bringing ultimate healing and restoration.
The Garden of Gethsemane— In His anguish, Jesus prayed with blood coming out of His eyes for God’s will to be done, even though it meant great suffering. This moment showed His obedience and trust in God's plan, which ultimately brought the joy of our salvation.
He saw the Cross as Victory— Jesus "for the joy that was set before him endured the cross." His suffering on the cross was necessary for the redemption of his people, leading to the joy of restored relationship with God for all who believe.
Resurrection and Eternal Joy — Through His death and resurrection, Jesus brought the greatest joy—victory over sin and death, Giving eternal life to all who trust in Him.
So, if you are in Christ, know that both suffering and joy are promises from our Lord.
Remember, in this world you will have troubles, but take heart; Christ has conquered the world.
And that this suffering is not worth comparing to the glory that is to be revealed.
So praise the Lord, O my soul, for He is faithful, and His love endures forever.
But if you are not in Christ, know that both suffering and sorrow are realities you must face alone.
Remember, in this world, you will have troubles, and without Christ, there is no true hope.
And this suffering, without the hope of glory, can seem unbearable.
So, without the Lord, there is no true source of praise, and His love is not yours to claim.
Don’t harden your heart. Repent and put your trust in Him today is the day of Salvation No endurezcas tu corazón.
